Benefits

We provide a range of benefits to recognise and reward the valuable work of our employees.  These include:

Pay and expenses - our lowest rate of pay is above the national minimum wage rates. Find out details of our salary grades.

Pension - We provide a defined benefit pension scheme, which provides you with a secure income when you are ready to retire, independent of share prices and stock market variations.  The scheme also provides protection for you in the event of redundancy or ill health, and for your family in terms of survivor benefits.

The Council contributes towards an amount towards your pension, payable on retirement. View our pension administrators website for further details (link opens in a new window).

Annual leave - We offer generous holiday entitlements, ranging from 22 to 32 days plus bank holidays, depending upon your grade and length of service. Find out details of our annual leave entitlements.

Sick pay and support - Should you become ill, and with proper documentation, we will pay up to 6 months' sick pay on full salary (linked to length of service), with access to occupational health and counselling services.

Learning and Development - The Council has a commitment to lifelong learning. We provide excellent development opportunities for all employees, including both in house training and support for employees to complete external qualifications relevant to their role.  In some cases, funding support may be available.

  • improve your health and fitness along with reducing your carbon footprint

Car Salary Sacrifice Scheme: If you are an employee on a permanent contract and are looking for a new car, you could benefit from our salary sacrifice scheme where you can drive away in a brand new, full maintained and insured car for up to four years.

This scheme provides a fully inclusive motoring package for a fixed monthly amount. All you'll need to worry about is fuel and oil.

Work/Life Balance - The Council recognises that all employees need to balance home life with meeting work commitments through the provision of appropriate policies and support, for example, family and parental leave, flexible hours and career break schemes.  For many roles, the Council also now embraces the principles of WorkSmart, which creates opportunities facilitating a combination of working in the office, adhoc homeworking, or working from various locations, therefore being flexible about where/ how you carry out your role, the specific opportunities available will be discussed at interview.

Fostering Friendly Employer - As a fostering friendly employer, the Council supports the valuable work that employees who are foster carers undertake when they care for our city’s vulnerable children. To do this additional leave is granted to support foster carers and those applying to become foster carers.

Mindful Employer - As an organisation Hull City Council signed the Mindful Employer Charter in January 2014 and continues to be a signatory to date. The Mindful Employer Charter is a voluntary UK-wide initiative.
