Waste and recycling

Changes to the way we collect household and recyclable waste

We are rolling out a new programme of rubbish collection, aimed at improving our service to you as well as making it easier for you to recycle more of your waste. The new service will collect a wider range of material that you've specifically asked for, including garden waste, kitchen and food waste, cardboard, and a wider range of plastics.

Clock showing 7amChanges to collection time

All recycling and refuse collections will now start at 7am.

Please make sure your bins and boxes are put out from 7am on your collection day. The aim of this earlier time is to improve the range and quality of service we provide and we will do everything we can to ensure the changes are introduced as smoothly as possible.

Residents in Hull generate approximately 135,000 tonnes of waste each year that goes into a mix of recycling and landfill.

Hull City Council collects and disposes of all waste in Hull, through a range of household and business site collections, and rubbish and recycling sites.

The amount of waste we produce is steadily increasing year on year, and it is vital we increase recycling and reduce the amount of rubbish that goes into landfill.

You can find more information on the Target 45+ website (link opens in a new window) or by reading the sustainable waste management strategy.

Love Food Hate Waste

We are supporting the Waste and Resources Action Programme’s (WRAP’s) “Love Food Hate Waste” campaign, helping you to reduce the amount of food you throw away.

Wasting food waste costs £420 a year for every family in Hull. Nationally, we waste 6.7 million tonnes of food every year - about a third of the food we buy. Over one quarter (nearly 1.2 million tonnes) of the food thrown away each year is thrown away still in its packaging.

Every year we waste (in tonnes) -

  • 359,000 potatoes
  • 328,000 sliced of bread
  • 90,000 apples

Foods thrown away whole and unused include –

  • grapes (4.8 billion a year)
  • tomatoes (1 billion a year)
  • bread rolls (775 million a year)
  • yoghurts and yoghurt drinks (484 million a year)

Some food waste, such as egg shells, banana skins and tea bags, is inevitable. Home composting is a great way to stop this sort of waste ending up in landfill, and is good for our gardens too.

Most of the food we throw away could have been eaten if it had been managed better.
