Family activities
All children must be accompanied by an adult (adults are also welcome to join in practical activities).
Rhythm and sound
Date: Friday 16 October
Time: 10am - 3pm
Have fun with music, sound and movement in this session led by professional musician Kathy Seabrook. Inspired by colour and pattern, children will play with making sounds and rhythms in response to the textiles.
For pre-school, nursery and infant groups (up to seven years). Hour-long slots are available for groups of up to 20 children plus parents or carers.
Drawn to music
Date: Saturday 24 October
Time: 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.15pm and 2.15pm (45 minute drop-in sessions)
Join musician Kathy Seabrook and artist Dawn Brooks to celebrate The Big Draw.
Suitable for any age, from babies upwards, we’ll be drawing and playing with sounds and rhythms inspired by the shapes and colours of the fabrics.
Wrapped up for Christmas
Date: Saturday 5 December
Time: 1pm - 3pm
Join artist Dawn Brooks to print your own Christmas wrapping paper, inspired by the fabrics on display.
Suitable for children aged four to 12 years. Places are limited and must be booked in advance.
Exhibition talks
The designs of Althea McNish by Lara Goodband, project curator for Hull Traders
Date: Wednesday 21 October
Time: 12.30pm - 1pm
Trinidadian-born Althea McNish - Britain’s first and most distinguished black textile designer - created eight patterns for Hull Traders. This talk, which examines the vital contribution of her painterly florals to this innovative textile company, is part of Hull’s celebrations for Black History Month.
Talk by Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor, contemporary textile artist and designer
Date: Thursday 12 November
Time: 12.30pm - 1.15pm
Joanna specialises in printed textiles and has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. Author of the popular reference book 'Dyeing and Screenprinting on Textiles', she is also a research lecturer at Glasgow School of Art. Joanna will be discussing her work and the hand screenprinting techniques used by Hull Traders.
Exhibition tour by Lesley Jackson, curator of Shirley Craven and Hull Traders exhibition
Date: Wednesday 18 November
Time: 12.30pm - 1pm
An independent writer, curator and design historian specialising in 20th century design, Lesley Jackson is curator of the exhibition and author of the accompanying publication. Her tour will provide unique insights into the designs of Shirley Craven and Hull Traders.
