Each March councillors agree a budget and this sets the amount of money needed to be collected from council tax. A bill is then sent to each home that shows how much needs to be paid. Apart from the charge for the council, the bill also includes the charges payable for the Police Authority and the Fire Service. The amount payable is based on the value of each home, and the number of people that live there. The person that needs to pay the bill is usually the person that lives there as their main home and there are various ways the amount payable can be reduced.
