Local history library
Our local history library has now reopened in its new home, Hull History Centre. With free entry, Hull History Centre houses archives and local studies resources from the council and University of Hull.
The extensive local history library collection, housed in the Hull History Centre, includes items available on loan with a Hull libraries ticket. Visitors can also use computers, microfilm and fiche readers. The microfiche and film readers can be booked by telephone or email. There is no charge except for copying and printing.
Historical records held in the local history library
Our local document collections include -
- Winifred Holtby
Winifred Holtby was an author of several novels, including South Riding, and was famous as a journalist and novelist in the 1920s and 30s. In addition to her published works and biographies, we house a collection of thousands of letters, manuscripts and other documentary items, which form the largest collection of original material on Winifred Holtby in public ownership in the world
- Slavery and Wilberforce
The library houses over 1,500 volumes on William Wilberforce, the abolition of slavery and all aspects of slavery, ancient and modern and includes William Wilberforce Letters 1799-1832
- Whaling
Reflecting Hull's role as a major whaling port, this collection includes some whaling ship log-books and also covers the general history of whaling and the natural history of whales
- Ephemera
The library has preserved a range of this transitory material, including: theatre bills and programmes (around 7,000 18th and 19th century playbills), football programmes, post cards, timetables, company publicity, and so on
- Andrew Marvell
This collection includes published poetry, biographies and critical works
- Hohenrein family and business
The papers of this mid 19th - 20th century German immigrant family include their successful butchery business and cinema ownership, also depicts anti-German feeling around the first world war
- Amy Johnson
The library houses 286 letters written between 1922-28
- Business records
Some of the business records housed in the library include records Forster and Andrews organ builders 1844-1969. The records detail all the organs the company supplied from its Hull factory to institutions and individuals around the world
- Religious archives
The religious archives in the library include records from Primitive Methodist Connexion Circuit records 1842-1920, Fish Street Chapel 1768-1982
- Trade Union
The library houses Hull Trades and Labour Council papers
- Mapping Hull
A CD-ROM of 12 historic maps showing the development of Hull from 1530 to 1906 is available
Opening times
Monday and Wednesday, 9.30am - 7.45pm Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9.30am - 5.30pm Saturday, 9am - 4.30pm Sunday, closed
Last orders for document retrieval are 45 minutes before closing.
Location
The local history library is situated in the Hull History Centre, which is 10 minutes walk from trains and buses at the Paragon Interchange. There are a small number of parking spaces in the adjoining pay and display car park, including disabled spaces. St John's Street and Kingston Square pay and display car parks approximately two minutes walk away.
