Antisocial behaviour

Antisocial behaviour is any aggressive, intimidating or destructive activity that damages or destroys another person's quality of life.

Some examples of antisocial behaviour include -

  • misuse of public space - this includes groups of people congregating in green spaces designed for recreation. These groups could be drinking alcohol, dropping litter and dangerous items such as broken bottles
  • intimidation and harassment - this can be verbal abuse, actual violence and threats of violence
  • criminal activity - this can involve selling drugs, prostitution and selling and receiving of stolen goods
  • youth nuisance - this can include young people gathering and moving about in large numbers. Their behaviour at times can include drinking alcohol, being verbally abusive and frightening and threatening towards passers by
  • noise nuisance - the noise can be loud music, televisions or dogs barking
  • graffiti and vandalism - this includes damage to personal property like your car or your home
  • racial harassment and hate crime - this is any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice because of their race, colour, creed, gender, religion, disability or sexuality
  • community tension - this is behaviour likely to cause upset or increased tension in your area. This could be things such as gang activity, fly posters promoting extremist groups and behaviour likely to cause offence to other members of the community.

We are committed to working with local communities to tackle anti-social behaviour by means of prevention, diversion and enforcement.

Keep a log of antisocial behaviour

It is important that problems are reported as soon as possible. It is very important that you keep a note of the dates and times of incidents as it helps the antisocial behaviour team know when and for how long the nuisance occurs.

What happens after you have reported antisocial behaviour

When you report an incident to us, we will discuss the issue with you and agree with you a course of action. The enforcement officer responsible for your case will take appropriate action, as agreed with you, against the perpetrators. We will give you regular updates on how your case is progressing. All of these details will be provided in your ‘supporting you plan’.

Antisocial behaviour enforcements

There are a number of enforcements in place to help reduce antisocial behaviour, including warnings, ASBOs, parenting orders and penalties.

More information about the types of antisocial behaviour enforcements

Community payback work can be given to offenders as part of a community sentence and can include work like removing graffiti or litter in your neighbourhood. This work benefits the community and means the offenders pay back the community for their crimes.

Prevention, however, is the most effective long term solution in tackling antisocial behaviour. We have a number of ways in which we prevent and divert antisocial behaviour.

There is also support for young people involved in crime.
