On your marks for Open Weekend in Hull - 19/07/2010

People of all ages and abilities in Hull are urged to get active this weekend as the city takes part in a national event to mark the two-year countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Whether you regularly take part in sports and recreation, or if you would like to try something new, a wide range of activities (from archery to urban basketball) will be staged from Friday 23 - Sunday 25 July.

Hull's Open Weekend of activities will take place at venues and sites across the city including Woodford Leisure Centre, Ennerdale Leisure Centre, Trinity Square, Costello Stadium, and Beverley Road Baths.

Many of the venues are managed and provided by Hull City Council, and attending Open Weekend events will be an ideal opportunity to find out about the wide range of fitness classes and leisure services available all year round, such as swimming lessons for adults and children, aerobics, fitness suites with state of the art equipment, and much more.

Open Weekend in Hull forms part of one of the largest community and sporting events ever held in the UK as towns and cities across the land collectively stage sporting activities to inspire thousands of people to get into the spirit of London 2012.

Meanwhile, another special event taking place during Hull's Open Weekend will be the official opening of the city's two adiZones.

The adiZones, at Massey Street in west Hull and Rosmead Street in east Hull, are designed in the shape of the London 2012 Olympic logo and provide permanent facilities for sports including weight lifting, basketball, tennis, dance, climbing, and five-a-side football.

Free to use all year round, the adiZones were set up in partnership with sportswear manufacturer Adidas, Hull City Council, and Gateway. The Lord Mayor of Kingston Upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor David Gemmell, will officially open Rosmead Street adiZone on Saturday 24 July at 11am, and the Massey Street site the same day at 2pm.

Councillor Kalvin Neal, the city's portfolio holder for enterprise and employment, said: "Hull Open Weekend is a fabulous opportunity for local people to take part in the national countdown to London 2012.

"There is a varied programme of activities lined up and I urge people of all ages and abilities to make a special effort to get involved.

"For many people, Hull's Open Weekend could prove to be the first step to adopting a healthier lifestyle by making regular use of the city's sports and leisure facilities to increase their level of physical activity."

Meanwhile, Katie Bulmer (a promising local boxer who trains at St Paul's Amateur Boxing Club in the Old Town) will represent Hull at the regional launch of the Open Weekend programme.

She will take part in a sparring exhibition at Millennium Square in Leeds on Friday 23 July.
