Public meeting on closure of David Lister School - 09/02/2010

A public meeting is due to be held on Thursday 11 February at 7.15pm at David Lister School to give residents and families the chance to have their say on proposals to bring forward the planned closure of the school.

At its meeting on 21 December 2009, Hull City Council's Cabinet agreed to undertake a public consultation on proposals to bring the closure of David Lister School forward to 31 August 2012.

As plans for the council's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme have progressed, it has become increasingly clear that it would not be in the best interests of pupils or staff to keep the school open until 2015.

The options for early closure have been carefully considered by Hull City Council who have been working closely with the school's Interim Executive Board (IEB) and other schools in the east of the city.

By 2012 the BSF programme will mean that there will be additional capacity in other schools in the east of the city to accommodate the pupils who would have attended David Lister, and the opportunity for pupils to access a wider range of educational opportunities better suited to their long-term needs and sustained improvement.

Councillor Christine Randall, portfolio holder for education and children's services, said:

"This meeting will give local people the chance to hear about our proposals and have their say on the plans to bring the closure forward, which we believe is in the best interests of young people in the east of the city.

"The closure will no doubt raise standards and improve attainment for children and young people, giving them the best possible opportunity to fulfil their potential."

Local residents and parents of children at the school are invited to the meeting to find out more about the plans and voice any concerns that they may have.

Following the consultation, a report will be prepared for the council's Cabinet to consider the views expressed during the consultation period. The decision about whether to bring forward the closure of David Lister School will be made at the Cabinet meeting on 22 March.

During the consultation period, representations are invited, which should be sent to the Head of Learning, Leisure and Achievement, Brunswick House, Strand Close, Beverley Road, Hull, HU2 9DB by Monday 1 March 2010.
