New venture for young Hull businessman - 18/02/2009

Hull City Council is supporting the latest business venture of Dave Garbera (aged 20), managing director of KH Smilers, as he launches his new book which aims to inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of the future.

The book, entitled 'Smilers' tells the story of how Dave took part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme and went on to establish a successful business whilst at Kelvin Hall School. Now at university, Dave is keen to share his experiences with other young people, including the highs and lows of running a company at such a young age.

The book will be part of a trilogy being developed with the support of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and Hull Training.

Councillor Christine Randall, lead member for children and young people's services at Hull City Council, said:

"We are pleased to support Dave's latest business venture, and we hope that many of our young people will find it of interest. In Hull we are pleased to be in a position to be able to support young entrepreneurs like Dave, as he himself inspires young entrepreneurs of the future."

Maureen Foers OBE, Chair of Hull's Youth Enterprise Bank, said:

"We have seen how Dave Garbera has developed over the years since he started out as managing director of a Young Enterprise Company and were pleased to be able to support this latest venture from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. Dave has also agreed to be one of our first business supporters for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009, which is fantastic news."

Dave Garbera, managing director of KH Smilers, said:

"I am grateful for all the support that Hull City Council and the Youth Enterprise Partnership have given us in developing our business, and now in my new business venture. I want to put something back in order to inspire the entrepreneurs of the future and tell them that if you dream dangerously you can achieve what you want in life.

"As part of my personal campaign to support young entrepreneurs I will be donating some of the profits from sales to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank so it can continue to support young entrepreneurs like myself."

KH Smilers produce a range of high quality naturally-grown bedding plants, hanging baskets and decorative arrangements in their own greenhouses and polytunnel, for both individual orders and larger events.

In December, KH Smilers became the youngest nominees in Business Week magazine's annual European Young Entrepreneur Contest, and the only UK entry to reach the short list. The results are yet to be announced.
