Training for tenants

We provide a number of courses and training schemes aimed at giving tenants and residents the confidence, knowledge, and skills to be able to effectively participate and influence housing decisions.

All training courses are completely free of charge and we can cover some of the expenses incurred by participants, such as travel costs. Training is available to cover a range of subjects including -

  • equalities awareness
  • chairing a meeting
  • minute taking
  • presentation skills
  • asylum seekers and refugees - myth busting

Training is provided by Hull City Council as well as some external providers such as -

  • The National Tenants Resource Centre at Trafford Hall, Chester
  • TPAS (Tenant Participation Advisory Service)

We will meet the costs of training provided by external agencies, if funds are available. If a large group of tenants require a specific external training course we will invite the training agency to deliver the course in Hull.

A number of courses are also available for individuals who feel that they would benefit from some specific training. If you are interested in attending some training that we do not currently offer, we may look for other courses that will meet your needs.

You will need to complete an application form to apply for courses which are not directly provided by the tenant participation team. These are then authorised by the tenant involvement service improvement group, based on a criteria which includes resources available, suitability and feeback.

For further information about the training courses available please contact the tenant participation team.

The Housing Academy

We developed the Housing Academy to give customers a broad insight into how the housing service in Hull functions. Topics include -

  • housing law
  • housing finance
  • dealing with anti-social behaviour
  • lettings policy and practice
  • equalities and customer service

The Housing Academy takes place as an evening or daytime class at the University of Lincoln on George Street and runs over a period of 14 weeks. Any housing customer can apply for a place. Each course is limited to 20 participants and, due to high demand, places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you apply for a place and the current course is fully booked, you will be put on a waiting list to attend the next one.
