The team of more than 40 teachers has approximately 2,750 pupils between them and covers all the standard orchestral and band instruments. The Service also offers vocal, guitar and keyboard tuition. The work of the Service in schools is supplemented by the provision of high quality ensemble opportunities at the Albemarle Music Centre. These ensembles cover a range of styles from orchestral through wind and brass bands to jazz and percussion groups, as well as junior and senior choirs. All ages and abilities are catered for. The Music Centre and the ensembles are funded by the Local Authority. There is no charge to schools or pupils for membership of an ensemble run by the Music Service.

Pupils having instrumental tuition through the Music Service are initially loaned an instrument from our stock, free of charge. When they are more established, pupils can purchase their own instrument through the council’s VAT-free instrumental purchase scheme. The Music Service has approximately 2000 instruments out on loan at any one time.

The Music Service has, over the last few years, increased its range of musical opportunities to young people and the wider community by purchasing a set of Indonesian gamelan instruments, a set of African drums, and a set of Brazilian Samba percussion instruments to add to its set of West Indian steel pans. Many workshops using these instruments are now run at the Albemarle Music Centre, in schools and out in the community. The Music Service also owns "Soundbeam" equipment for use by people with profound disabilities to create and experience music-making.
