Compost Awareness Week

Pile of leavesComposting

Millions of tonnes of garden waste, such as grass cuttings, prunings and leaves, are sent to landfill sites each year.

Boy putting leaves in a compost binComposting is an inexpensive, natural process that transforms your kitchen and garden waste into a valuable food for your garden.

Finished compost is great for using on flowerbeds, vegetable plots and for mixing into planters. It can really make your garden bloom. By composting at home, you can reduce the amount of rubbish you put in your grey refuse bin, while returning important nutrients and minerals to your soil. Home compost is free, easy to make and even easier to use.

The aim of our waste strategy, Target 45+, is to make minimising waste a priority. One key part of waste not yet collected from all households is garden waste. Before introducing collections citywide, the most important thing is to reduce the amount of waste to be collected. We need to promote the most cost-effective ways of getting you to think twice before putting garden and compostable waste into your grey refuse bins.

We have joined up with the Recycle Now Home Composting Campaign, a government funded scheme, to encourage people to reduce the waste they send to landfill.

Buying in large volumes direct from manufacturers lets us offer compost bins for less. Also, we subsidise them and their free home delivery. This means that you can purchase a standard 330ltr black compost bin at a vastly reduced price, compared to the regular price of £49!

Order your bin online now at Recycle Now (link opens in a new window) or call 0845 076 0223 quoting reference “kiss9”. You can now order your accessories online too.

Tips on how to make compost, and other information, will be supplied with each compost bin. More information and composting information sheets are available to download from Recycle Now (link opens in a new window).
