What to do if you're worried about a child

Keeping children safe

Everyone is responsible for helping to keep children safe.

When anyone becomes aware that a child might be at risk or suffering from abuse or neglect, they have a duty to do something about it.

  • If you think a child might be in danger, call the central duty team on 01482 448 879.
  • If you know the child is already receiving a service from children's social care, you can call the family resource centre where the child lives.
  • If there is an emergency outside normal office hours, please contact our emergency duty team on 01482 788 080.
  • If a child is suffering abuse and requires urgent attention because of immediate danger, call the police on 0845 606 0222 or the emergency services.

Safeguarding children policies and procedures

We develop policies and procedures that help to safeguard children. People who work with children use our policies to know -

  • what to do when they are concerned about a child
  • what training people should have if they work with children
  • how to recruit and supervise people who work with children
  • how to investigate any allegations against people who work with children
  • how to make sure children who are privately fostered are kept safe and well
  • how to work with other children's services authorities and their board partners

Child protection policy and procedures template

To create a comprehensive child protection policy and procedure for your organisation, download the following document and complete with relevant, specific information for your organisation. By using this template as a starting point you can feel confident that you will have covered the relevant areas for consideration when safeguarding children.

Serious case reviews

We investigate serious cases of abuse or neglect, and when there is concern for the way the situation has been dealt with. Where a serious case review takes place, a final report is published.

Child death reviews

The death of any child is a tragedy. It is vital that all child deaths are carefully reviewed. This is so that we may learn as much as possible from them, to try to prevent future deaths, and to support families. We are required to review the deaths of all children aged up to 18 years old in Hull.
