Carrying out works on or near a watercourse
If you are planning works on or near a watercourse, you should contact us first to ensure that the proposed project does not cause an increased flood risk or impact adversely on the natural environment, inappropriate works may result in enforcement action. A watercourse is a river, stream, ditch (whether dry or not), drain, culvert or pipe through which water may flow.

As part of the land drainage act (1991), you may be required to seek formal consent from us or the Environment Agency depending on the type of watercourse. Please contact us in the first instance to determine if consent is required and to confirm who you will have to approach. We will explain the forms, timescales and all required supporting information in advance of any formal consent application and assist throughout your submission.
