Support for adoptive parents

Adoption is a lifelong commitment and we are here to support you every step of the way. We will provide you with training and support to help you on your journey to becoming an adoptive parent. We will also support you after you have adopted.

We will discuss with you what your needs are and advise you about the support that is best suitable for you. The support available to you includes –

  • regular visits from an adoption social worker when a child is placed with you. Once an adoption order is made it is your choice whether you want further support or not.

  • monthly support/training groups - you will be invited to these as soon as your application has been accepted and you can attend these groups as long as you find them useful to you as an adoptive parent.

  • yearly adoption parties - these give adoptive families the chance to meet each other. There are also monthly coffee mornings for adopters with pre-school children.

  • help with birth family contact - a specialised social worker can help you with birth family contact, including writing annual contact letters.

  • financial support - financial support could include a lump sum if you meet specific needs as well as ongoing payments if you adopt a child from Hull who meets the criteria. Your social worker will advise you on your individual circumstances.

  • psychologist referral – we have a psychologist attached to the Adoption team who is available for consultation and advice, if needed.

  • support from After Adoption Yorkshire - After Adoption Yorkshire provide an independent support service for everyone affected by adoption.

  • Hull adoption library - the library includes books on a variety of adoption issues as well as therapeutic games designed for families.

  • other workshops and training - the workshops and training are for both families and parents and are designed around the needs of and issues for adoptive families.
