Hull Central Library becomes an IP Centre - 06/02/2015
Businesses in Hull received a boost today when Hull Central Library became a recognised Intellectual Property (IP) Centre, the latest to join the UK's network of Patent Libraries (PatLibs).

Understanding, protecting and getting the most out of your IP is a key ingredient in a successful business. Firms that protect their IP are more than three times more likely to succeed and a recent survey showed 88 per cent of businesses in the North believe it's important to understand how to protect their IP.

Hull Central Library is one of just 15 centres across the country providing businesses and entrepreneurs with expert advice and support on a range of IP related issues

Qualified and experienced library staff will be available to offer practical assistance on a variety of Intellectual Property Rights, as well as helping with a variety of services. These services include patent searching, clinics with IP professionals and general business advice.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Leisure, Events and Public Wellbeing, said:

"We are delighted to be a member of the Patent Library.

"This will raise the profile of the library service in Hull and the importance of protecting business ideas which will help to strengthen the city's economy."

Rosa Wilkinson, Director of Innovation at the Intellectual Property Office, said:

"I am delighted to welcome Hull Central Library to the UK PatLib Network. The network provides support, advice and information in respect of IP on a regional basis. It is vital that this support continues and the expansion of the network demonstrates the importance of this support. IP is important; in the UK we invest more in ideas and knowledge than buildings and machinery. Businesses need to recognise this and make sure that they take steps to protect their innovation and creativity.

"Entrepreneurs and innovators within Hull and the surrounding areas now have access to the right support and advice to ensure that they can do this. Through the provision of free specialised advice, workshops and IP clinics they will have the knowledge to recognise intellectual property within their business and understand the value it brings as their business starts to grow. This will benefit not only the local economy but the wider UK economy."

The library has been supported through the Enterprising Libraries programme, which is funded by the Arts Council England and the Department for Communities and Local Government, in partnership with the British Library. The programme uses libraries' roles as community hubs to spark local economic growth and improve social mobility in communities across the country.

Also joining Hull Central Library as a new addition to the PatLib Network through this programme is Northamptonshire Central Library.
