England football star to visit new Hull team - 13/08/2012
A newly formed Hull women's football team is set to be visited by an English international footballer to inspire and develop their skills further.

Rockford Rangers FC will have three visits from English international footballer Sue Smith after the team successfully recruited women who wanted to play football.

Following their successful recruitment campaign Rockford Rangers FC has been rewarded with the visits from Sue Smith who has been awarded over 90 caps for England and has recently been commentating at the Olympics.

Sue will visit the football team three times over the next couple of months to give the Rockford Rangers players chance to ask questions about top level football, be trained and coached by her too.

The team, who are based at Kinloss Garth on Bransholme, are also opening these sessions to other women who are interested in playing women's football. The sessions are on Wednesday's on 22 August, 29 August and 5 September from 7pm.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said:

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for this newly-formed football team to meet and get coached by an international football star.

"This country has had a brilliant sporting year so far which we all hope will leave a long lasting legacy of getting people more active. I wish Rockford Rangers FC every success for the future."

The meetings with Sue Smith have been organised with Sporting Champions in partnership with Hull City Council, Rockford Rangers FC, Sport England, Humber Sports Partnership and East Riding County FA. Sporting Champions is a Sport England Initiative which brings world-class athletes face-to-face with young people and adults to inspire and motivate them.

Lisa Wright, Senior Sports Development Officer for North Hull, added:

"Rockford Rangers FC is a Sportivate funded initiative that aims to give women a greater opportunity to play football in Hull. We really want give them the chance to meet people like Sue Smith to help them feel more confident about taking part in football or any other sporting activities for that matter.

"We're particularly keen to make sports and physical activities available to women in the Orchard Park and Greenwood, Bransholme East and Bransholme West areas of the city, which we're doing with Sport England 'Active Women' funding."

The Sport England 'Active Women' funding aims to help females overcome all barriers faced with taking part in physical activity such as costs of activities, transport to venues, confidence, childcare and many more.
