Young fundraiser gets Olympic backing - 17/07/2012
A children's home youngster from Hull, who is raising funds for a local youth project, will meet her Olympic mentor this week.

Fifteen year old Charlotte Newton is just one of 20 youngsters from across the country to be selected to develop a community project through the Dame Kelly Holmes' charity - the Unlocking Potential programme.

The 20 youngsters have been selected to work over the next six months with sports mentors on projects to improve their local community under the programme. Olympian and five times judo European Champion Chloe Cowen has been teamed up with Charlotte.

This week Charlotte will be meeting the sporting champ in Hull to finalise plans on a community project to raise funds to buy furniture for the Warren and she is hoping this will be put towards a trip for disadvantage young people.

Charlotte was thrilled to be accepted on the programme and said:

"I am very excited to be given this opportunity to impact on my local community in a good way."

Charlotte was nominated for the project by Gill Lyon, Education Coordinator for the Virtual School who said:

"Charlotte has been through some challenging times during her teens but has demonstrated resilience and real strength of character with support from Linus Penna at the Children's Home and his team, the Virtual School and Smart Moves.

"We are proud of Charlotte's achievements so far and I feel privileged to be able to support her through this next stage of her personal development. I believe that the programme will develop and enhance her self-esteem and would enable her to help others and herself to unlock their potential."
