Veterans Weekend celebrating the past and the present - 12/07/2012
Veterans Weekend takes place in Hull's East Park on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July between 10am and 5pm.

The family weekend will be a fantastic experience for people of all ages, recognising and celebrating the role of our armed forces both past and present. People will have the chance to meet veterans and experience what it was like in the 1940's as well as meet current servicemen and women from the armed forces.

Seven regiments will be attending and there will be a variety of military vehicles and memorabilia, living history displays such as a German field hospital, traditional fairground attractions, a young peoples' rugby tournament and a range of other activities. The main stage will showcase 1940's music, dance and fashion.

Highlights will include a performance from the Red Devils - The Parachute Regiment Freefall Team between 3 and 3.30pm on Sunday and WWI and WWII battleground re-enactments taking place on both days.

New to this year's Veteran's event is a tank pull. The 150 transport regiment will be pulling a tank 80 meters on the Saturday. Teams can also take part and compete to pull the tank in the quickest time; if you are interested in taking part contact Captain Ken Smith on 01482 354278.

On the Sunday at 10.20am the veterans will assemble at the main gates of East Park, ready to parade at 10.35am to the stage area lead by the Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force Band. This will be followed by a short service by Reverend Alan Craven, the Last Post - the bugle call used within British Infantry regiments - and a two minute silence to remember our country's servicemen and women.

Honorary Alderman Brian Petch, founder partner of the Veterans Weekend, which first took place in 2005, said:

"I am looking forward to the eighth Veterans' Weekend which is always enjoyed by a large number of residents and visitors. We make sure the event has something for everyone and that it is a family-orientated event which celebrates the role veterans, armed forces and the public have played in protecting our country over the years.

"Veterans weekend helps all generations to understand and remember war time Britain and to thank those who have protected, and continue to protect, our country. "

Admission on both days is free and limited parking is available in East Park via the main East Park gates for a £1 donation to the Army Cadets.

The weekend's activities are organised by Hull City Council and the Hull Veterans' Awareness Committee. The full programme of events can be viewed on the Hull City Council's events diary.
