Council welcomes transport funding for port pinch-point - 02/07/2012
Hull City Council welcomed the decision by the Department for Transport (DfT) to fund a £590,000 improvement to the A1033 Northern Gateway roundabout near the Port of Hull.
The funding is being provided as part of the DfTs "pinch-point programme".
The Highways Agency has today (Monday 2 July) announced it will "reduce the extensive congestion during peak periods and improve access" at the King George Dock and Ferry Terminal at the Port of Hull.
The proposed scheme involves the provision of traffic signals on the A1033 approaches to the roundabout and a dedicated lane for port-bound traffic.
Councillor Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Transport, welcomed the announcement of the funding for this improvement and said he expected any design issues to be resolved by the Council and the Highways Agency working closely together on the implementation of the scheme.
He said: "Ensuring safe and efficient access to the port is particularly important given the critical role which the port will play in the developing renewables industry."
However he stressed that a comprehensive solution to the A63 Castle Street issue remained the Council's top priority.
Councillor Mancey added: "I am pleased that the Highways Agency has given us an assurance that this funding for the A1033 Northern Gateway 'in no way prejudices other schemes' which we have prioritised."
