Popular Humber Mouth literature festival continues this week - 02/07/2012
Humber Mouth Literature Festival continues this week with a varied programme of literature events and activities from comedy to thrillers, music to poetry and exhibitions and workshops for all ages to enjoy.
Paul Holloway, Arts Development Manager for Hull City Council said:
"The festival is in its 19th year after being established as a popular festival in 1993 and remaining popular ever since. It delivers both local and national writers and artists, across a variety of venues.
"So far this year the children of Ganton School have enjoyed making a performance with a Dickensian theme, the Dreadlockailen has entertained secondary school pupils at Hull Truck Thetare with Slam Poetry, and audiences have been captivated by evenings of crime, fantasy and horror."
The second week of the festival kicks off with Ross Sutherland at Fruit on Monday, and continues on Tuesday with 'Heartlines' at Western Library and 'Ghost Running', a new poetry and sound work based on long distance running, inspired by research undertaken for BBC Radio 3, from 7.30pm at Fruit.
On Wednesday 4 July, 6-7pm Creative Projects are inviting people to learn about internet video, including how to get the best footage on line and how to build a TV studio for less than £100! This workshop is free and will take place at Hull Central Library.
The popular Miriam Margoyles will also perform on Tuesday and Wednesday at Hull Truck Theatre.
Poeticat will be performing at Hull Central Library on Thursday 5 July, 6.30-8pm. They are a band equally at home at a music or literature festival, gracing stages as diverse as Glastonbury, Latitude and the Edinburgh Fringe. Poeticat are fronted by Catherine Martindale, a performance poet with a growing reputation and backed by an astonishing group of musicians. They are described as witty, powerful, and thoroughly modern. The performance will include the specially commissioned "Hard Times, Great Expectations" and will take place in the newly refurbished James Reckitt Reading Room. The performance is £4. Contact Creative Projects on 01482 564479 for more details.
On Saturday 7 July, 7.30pm at Hull Truck Theatre, Hard Rhymes and Great Exclamations present 'What can you say about our John?'
With his biting, satirical, political and very funny verse delivered in a rapid-fire performance style, John Cooper Clarke was initially the support act for many seminal punk bands including the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Joy Division, Elvis Costello and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Since the punk days, he has been recognised as one of England's most important poets and performers. John has appeared at numerous festivals in 2010 including Latitude, Green Man and Irelands Electric Picnic which have helped showcase his talents to younger fans. The event is £18 and tickets are available from Hull Truck Theatre on 01482 323638.
There are a number of other events still to take place - many of which are free - in various venues ranging from Pave to the Octagon Centre.
For full details of all events go to the Humber Mouth website - www.humbermouth.co.uk - or see the Festival brochure, available from libraries, Tourist Information Centres and other venues.
The Humber Mouth Literature Festival is the city of Hull's biggest festival and is managed by the City Arts team at Hull City Council.
