Plastic is fantastic - 15/06/2012
Hull City Council is supporting national Recycling Week, 18 - 24 June by encouraging residents to recycle their waste.

This year's theme is highlighting the importance of recycling plastics 'home and away', particularly with the many events taking place over the comings weeks i.e. Euro 2012, Wimbledon and the Olympics 2012.

Technology now allows for all shapes and sizes of plastic bottles, bags, food tubs, yogurt pots and food trays to be recycled. Remember, plastic bottles and packaging are not only found in the kitchen - check out the bathroom, the garage and garden shed too!

Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Transport and Emergency Planning, said:
"Last year Hull recycled and composted over 1,000 tonnes of waste every week and this saved the city over £3million in Landfill Tax alone which is a great achievement.

"We need to build on this and the annual waste packs that we're sending out to every household at the end of June will explain what can be recycled and in addition, we have the three household waste recycling centres that residents can use."

Recycling just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60W light bulb for six hours. (Source: Recoup) and currently only 48 per cent of plastic bottles are recycled.

Every day 15 million plastic bottles are used in the UK alone and if they were all recycled it would be the equivalent of taking 73,000 cars off the road annually - that's over half the number of cars entering London on any week day.

Recycling your waste including plastics is simple as it can be done through your household collection and adding it to your blue bin that is collected every two weeks.

Plastics that can be recycled include:

Bottles
Yogurt pots
Plastic bags
Margarine pots
Food trays
Hull City Council's Waste and Recycling team will be sending out this years waste and recycling packs to residents from 25 June which includes information on their collection dates and what can be recycled.

For more information on what you can recycle visit www.hullcc.gov.uk or call 01482 300 300.
