One of Britain's 'Biggest Losers' will be helping to launch the start of new Nordic walking sessions in Hull - before he sets off on an epic 56 day hike across the country.
Aaron Howlett, who won Biggest Loser UK in 2005 - a tv programme which sees people competing to lose weight - will be trying out Nordic walking before tackling the 'Great Walk'. Taking 56 days to complete the 'Great Walk' goes from Hull to John O'Groats to Landsend and back to Hull.
Rebecca Williams from Sports Development and Catherine Hughes from British Nordic Walking will be on hand to provide Aaron with help and advice.
The Nordic walking sessions will start on Monday 25 June and will leave from the pavilion cafe in East Park at 1:30pm every week.
Nordic walking is based on walking with two specially designed poles that increase the movement of regular walking. This makes Nordic walking a full body movement using 90 per cent of the body's muscles and burning nearly twice as many calories as normal walking.
The sessions will include a 30 minute tutorial on how to use the poles and the correct technique followed by 30 to 45 minutes of walking. The sessions are free but it will cost £1 to hire the poles. Please contact sports development on 01482 300300 to book a set of poles as they have to be matched to your height.
It is based on Alpine skiing and is very popular throughout Europe as a great way to get fit and active whilst at the same time reducing pressure on the leg joints and using more muscles than other forms of exercise. Swimming uses 70 per cent and jogging only 35 per cent of the body's muscles.
Nordic walking if 'All Gain, No Pain' due to the reduction of pressure on the joints but more calories are burnt than normal walking.
This will be the first Nordic walking session in Hull and hopefully will be the first of many.
Since winning the Biggest Loser competition, Aaron has continued to lose weight and help others to do so too. He has also completed seven marathons and with this challenge hopes to complete 94 in just 56 days. By completing the Great Walk he is raising money for Cash 4 Kids, Cystic Fibrosis Trust and ABF - The Soldiers Charity.
