Businesses who are leading the way in green working will inspire others to play a part in making Hull a leading green city in the UK and Europe as part of tomorrow's Green City Hull event.
Part of Business Week 2012, the event will also put the spotlight on how public, private, voluntary and community partners are coming together to create an ambitious and exciting green vision for Hull.
Over the past few months a small group of representatives from each sector have worked as part of a Green City Group to develop and involve hundreds more organisations and people in developing Hull's green vision.
A Green City Group was set up eight months ago and is a partnership between the public, voluntary and business sectors. The Group includes representatives from the Spencer Group, Stagecoach, Sewells, Eskimo Soup, Hull University, Groundwork and the Council and has been working on developing a clear green vision for Hull.
Councillor Martin Mancey, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Environmental Sustainability and Chair of the Green City Group:
"We have the chance to set the city on course for a future in which it would be competitive in a growing European offshore wind industry. We need to build on the opportunities that Green Port Hull presents, and find ways to involve every part of the city from residents through to our business sector; we want to set the city on course to becoming a leading low carbon city and recognised as a leading green city in the UK and Europe. And in so doing, see the creation of 1000's of skilled, well paid jobs that will mark the dawn of a new age of hope, ambition and prosperity for our citizens"
The Green City Hull event will be launched with a fleet of energy efficient vehicles being displayed in Queen Victoria Square - including the Council's solar-powered mobile library and new light-weight plastic-bodied refuse truck.
Councillor Mancey will open event within the City Hall by setting out the ambitions for the city over the next 20 years. Speakers from The Spencer Group, CEO Connexin, KMS, CO2 Sense, Yorkshire Electricity Partnerships, the University of Hull will report on where the green agenda is now and the opportunities for the future. Almost thirty local businesses will exhibit how they are working to make their businesses greener. The day will close with a speech by the Chief Executive of Hull City Council, Nicola Yates OBE.
