Hull City Council awarded DfT Bikeability funding to provide cycle training to Hull's schools - 11/06/2012
Hull City Council has been awarded funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) to support the nationally recognised 'Bikeability' scheme. A scheme that provides cycling training for the 21st century.
Hull City Council's Road Safety team is providing the new Bikeability scheme in partnership with First Steps Sports to deliver cycle training to children and young people in Hull's primary schools.
Some training to schools will start in June but the majority will start in the new academic year in September 2012.
For children and young people who do not currently own a bike one can be provided by the company for the duration of the training. This style of training can be adapted to the schools needs, with a minimum of eight hours training being provided. It can be condensed into a timescale to suit the schools.
For over two decades Practical Cycling Training has been offered free to all Hull's primary schools as part of a road safety strategy aimed at cutting injuries on the city's roads and this will continue to be free for all Hull schools. Each year around 1,000 children aged 10 and 11 take part in the training.
Mrs MacDonald, Headteacher at Collingwood Primary School, said:
"I think it is very important for all children to learn how to ride their bikes safely. With the ever increasing number of vehicles on the roads the availability of this type of training is essential to give children the best possible road safety knowledge."
Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Transport and Emergency Planning, said:
"Cycling has many benefits, both for the health of the individual as well as being a far more environmentally friendly form of transport, which should be encouraged from an early age.
"It is therefore vital that our children are given the opportunity to learn how to cycle safely when riding on the city's roads.
"The lessons learned from the training given will hopefully stay with them for life ensuring that they can enjoy cycle safely for many years to come."
James Moore, Managing Director of First Step Sports, said:
"Our whole company ethos is to help unlock the potential of young people through a healthy lifestyle and we are delighted to be working in partnership with Hull City Council in this area. We recognise the Council's sterling work over the last 20 years, particularly the many volunteers at the schools and we are committed to carrying on the great traditions of quality cycle training in the city."
