Council secures #8m to improve Hawthorne Avenue area - 30/05/2012
Hull City Council and its lead developer, Keepmoat Homes have today secured £8m of Regional Growth Fund (RGF) to transform the Hawthorn Avenue area with 1,475 new and refurbished eco-efficient homes after receiving a verbal confirmation of their successful bid from the Government.

The scheme will see £135m of investment in the area over the next 13 years including £9m coming from the council.

Councillor John Black, Portfolio Holder for Strategic and Operational Housing, said:

"It's disappointing that local residents have had to wait so long for this announcement, but better late than never.

"The funding is desperately needed to regeneration the Hawthorn Avenue area and create hundreds of local jobs over the next 13 years.

"We can now get on with the job and start to make the much needed improvements to the area that the residents and the city deserve."

Hull City Council's lead developer Keepmoat Home's bid for the £8m was conditionally awarded in April 2011, and was expected to be signed off by March. The bid has been through the due diligence and the Council and Keepmoat Homes before the final decision was made by Housing Minister Grant Shapps.

Keepmoat Homes working as Hull City Council's lead developer have been working on the project with work on the ground happening through out the past year with new houses being built on Hawthorn Avenue and Woodcock Street.

David Carmichael, Partnership Manager at Keepmoat Homes, said:

"The ongoing regeneration of Hull is extremely important to the community, as well as everyone directly involved with the project, and so we are delighted that this funding has now been confirmed."

The improvements in Hawthorn Avenue are part of a wider scheme to regenerate the whole of Newington and St. Andrews. Yesterday the council received confirmation of its successful bid of £3.5m to regenerate long-term empty properties, which includes homes in the Wellsted and Boulevard areas of Newington and St. Andrew's.
