Young enterprisers to Challenge the Badgers Sett - 30/05/2012
Young people from Hull and the East Riding aged 24 and under are being encouraged to take part in an enterprise competition to stand a chance of winning a share of up to £5,000 to put towards their enterprising idea.

Challenge the Badgers Sett is launching on 1 June and will be a Dragon's Den style competition. The competition has been named in honour of former BBC Apprentice finalist and international business woman Ruth Badger, who will chair the judging panel. The competition is being run in partnership by Hull City Council's Training and Hull's Youth Enterprise Bank alongside Force-7, Ruth Badger consultancy and GH Events.

Young people from Hull and East Riding have until 1 October to enter their enterprising idea, which can be based on anything from a new business venture to a community project. There are three age categories for youngsters to enter for primary schools entries who can win up to £500, secondary school entries who can win up to £750 and a section for 16-24 year olds who can win up to £1,500.

Independent panels will asses the applications and then draw up a shortlist for each category who will then come face-to-face with the 'Badgers', including Ruth Badger herself. The short listed young people will pitch their idea to the 'Badgers' during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012 in November and get the chance to double their initial winnings.

Ruth Badger said:

"I want to encourage young people in Hull, a city that I have adopted for its commitment to its enterprising young people, who possibly are not at the stage where they feel can develop their idea on their own or need some extra confidence.

"I know when I was young if there had being such a thing as youth enterprise I would have become an entrepreneur much younger in my life. Previous winners include Bronwyn Wilson of Crazy Critter World, and the Green Queens from Malet Lambert who are a real credit to the city. So come on young people in Hull show us how enterprising you are."

Councillor Steven Bayes, added:

"The sort of things we as judges will be looking at is how entrants are going to best use the prize money. Perhaps they are going to employ someone or they are going to put something back into their local community working with other young people.

"It might be the person with the most innovative idea or the person who has a great commercial business plan and needs a bit of extra cash to develop it further."

Richard Brough OBE Chair North Bank Partnership Humber LEP, said:

"I was delighted as a new partner with the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership to be invited to act as a judge in this competition to support your young people that live in Hull and the East Riding."
