Hull City Council, St Richard's Primary School and Humberside Police are working together to reduce the speed of drivers on Marfleet Lane.
Children, parents and staff at the school are worried about the lack of care shown by a minority of motorists passing the school and now Hull City Council Road Safety Officers and Humberside Police will be showing pupils how to use speed detection equipment.
The children will measure the speed of vehicles with a Laser Gun on Marfleet Lane and Police and Road Safety Officers will use the data to assess the scale of the problem. If anyone is speeding then the Police will stop the motorists allowing Year 6 pupils to speak to them offering a stern reminder of their responsibilities and offering a speeding ticket designed by pupils within the school.
Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Transport and Emergency Planning, said:
"This is an excellent way to highlight to drivers the dangers of speeding. Educating drivers to drive within the legal limit is vital if we are to improve road safety around the areas close to all schools."
Mrs Melia - Craven, Headteacher at St Richard's Primary School, said:
"We are very concerned about the speed of some vehicles using this extremely busy road and hope this initiative will make drivers think about their responsibilities.
"Pupils in our school are very aware of the dangers posed by speeding motorists and want to assist in educating them to be extra careful around schools. Ideally we would like a 20 mph speed limit outside the schools as has been the policy around other schools in the city."
Sue Boyeson, Hull City Council's Road Safety Officer, said:
"We try to educate motorists not punish, at least to begin with. We would much rather drivers get the message and slow down, especially near to schools."
PC Keith Ward, Casualty Reduction Officer, Humberside Police, said:
"I am happy to work in partnership with the Hull City Council Road Safety Team highlighting the dangers of speeding near to schools. Having the children educating the adults will hopefully have an impact on driver behaviour."
