Maritime History: Muster Rolls at the History Centre - 24/05/2012
Important records of the maritime history of Hull are now available at the Hull History Centre.

Hull Trinity House has transferred its Muster Rolls to the History Centre. Muster Rolls are lists compiled to record monthly contributions to a national pension fund between 1747 and 1851 of seamen sailing from Hull. These are invaluable records for a period which saw Hull's expansion as a port, and the rise and decline of the whaling trade.

Trinity House was founded in 1369 and received its royal charter in 1541. For centuries Trinity House supervised navigation and marine safety in and around the Humber as well as supporting retired seamen and their families. Trinity House continues to thrive today.

Captain Philip Watts, Master Warden of Trinity House said:

"Following the retirement of our Honorary Archivist, Professor Donald Woodward, the Brethren of Trinity House were concerned to ensure that our Muster Rolls were properly preserved and made available to the public under the right conditions. We are very pleased to work with the Hull History Centre to do this."

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said:

"Trinity House has made a unique contribution to the history of Hull over many centuries. I am delighted that some of this will now be preserved in the city's History Centre."

Readers at the History Centre will now be able to consult the records.
