Local school and Council join forces to tackle litter and dog fouling - 24/05/2012
Pupils from Broadacre Primary School were fed up of seeing dog mess and litter in their local area and they decided to do something about it.

Broadacre Primary School and Hull City Council's Environmental Enforcement Officers are working together to raise awareness and tackle the problems.

The school held a competition to design an anti dog fouling poster that would raise awareness about the issues. 294 pupils from the school entered their designs for the chance to have their poster printed and put up in the local area on community notice boards.

Residents in the Kings Park Area also raised concerns at the Community Issues meeting relating to the amount of dog mess, litter and fly tipping around Ings Lane footpath and Wawne Road.

As a result of the complaints Hull City Council wrote to all residents within the ward to let them know how we will work together with other agencies to tackle the problems.

Community wardens will be stencilling and adding signs as well as handing out doggy bags to dog walkers in the area and Environmental Enforcement Officers and PCSO's are also carrying out patrols in the area to identify those responsible for littering and not picking up their dog mess.

The letter will also call on the community to make an effort to ensure they dispose of any litter and waste responsibly, and if they are a dog owner to ensure they bag, pick up and bin their dog's mess correctly. It will also seek to encourage local pride by asking residents to provide information to help identify any persons responsible for the above problems raised by the local community.
Councillor Danny Brown, Lord Mayor of Kingston Upon Hull and Kings Park Ward Councillor, said:
"We want residents to be proud of their local area and community. For this to happen we need people to take responsibility when disposing litter and dog mess along the Ings Lane footpath. There are many bins that can be used for waste including dog mess."

Soozie Moulson, Broadacre Primary School, said:
"The young people have worked very hard on the posters and are pleased that they have been listened too.

"We are concerned about the health and wellbeing of other children and young people as well as the appearance of our local community and really hope the posters will encourage dog walkers to pick up their dog's mess and people won't drop litter."

Courtney Butler, pupil and winner of the competition, said:
"I feel really happy and proud that my design won the competition in school. I will be really excited to see my posters in the area."
