Call for Hull to offer a Heroes Welcome - 18/05/2012

Hull City Council, Hull Chamber of Commerce, Hull BID and the Yorkshire 150 Tpt Regiment are urging local businesses to sign up to Heroes Welcome.

Heroes Welcome is a national initiative to offer members of the armed forces a warm welcome when they enter a business. Businesses will display posters and stickers to show they are a part of the Heroes Welcome scheme. Businesses can even offer special discounts and offers. Hull City Council in partnership with 150Tpt Regiment will be coordinating the Heroes Welcome packs and businesses can sign up online.

Heroes Welcome form part of a greater city wide commitment to supporting veterans and the armed forces. From Tuesday 22 May www.veterans-hull.co.uk will launch as a one stop shop for support and information for veterans. This includes the four pathways of support agreed for veterans alongside partners such as the NHS and Jobcentre Plus. In October last year the Armed Forces and Veterans Charter was launched to recognise the dedication of military personnel and merchant seamen.

Councillor Steve Walker, who led negotiations to develop the Armed Forces and Veterans Charter, said:
"Many individuals, families, and businesses across the city will personally know of some one who has served or currently serving in the armed forces and know of their commitment and sacrifices on behalf of our city and our country.

"For this reason I hope that the Heroes Welcome will be warmly received by our business community. When businesses display the Heroes Welcome logo, I can think of no greater show of support for our serving forces and Veterans community."

Lieutenant Colonel John Connelly, based in Hull with 150 Tpt Regt said:
"The Heroes welcome scheme is an excellent undertaking that really does make the military feel part of the community that it serves, Councillor Walkers energy and dedication are recognised across the serving military, reserves and Cadet in Yorkshire. Hull should be proud of this undertaking as we your Military are proud to serve you at home and abroad, I hope the business community embrace the scheme."

Jobs Fair - Friday 25 May
A Jobs Fair will take place on Friday 25 May, 11am - 4pm at Octagon Centre, Walker Street for those looking for work after service with the Armed Forces or merchant navy.

The event has been organised by Hull City Council, Goodwin Development Trust, Jobcentre Plus, Hull College, Hull CVS, Ministry of Defence, Career Transition Partnership and Royal British Legion.
