Volunteers create colourful prelude exhibition Inspired by Warhol - 16/05/2012
Volunteers inspired by the city's high profile forthcoming ARTIST ROOMS Andy Warhol exhibition have created a colourful prelude and accompanying display at Ferens Art Gallery.

The Times They Were a Changin': Inspired by Warhol exhibition will run from 19 May - 21 October in Gallery 4 and will include highlights such as a yellow bubble-car known by its owner as 'the flying banana', an action man in lunar clothing and a sequined dress of Campbells Soup cans created in direct homage to Warhol's paintings.

The exhibition explores themes of art, fashion, music and product design with particular attention given to Hull's music scene in the 1960s and early 1970s in a specially commissioned film.

Drawn from Hull Museums' collections of transport, social history and art the show 's focus on 1960s urban youth culture has been inspired by the Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) ARTIST ROOMS exhibition of 80 iconic images, which will be shown from 2 June 2012 in Galleries 6, 8 and 9.

The objects have been selected and interpreted with close involvement and input from Heritage Volunteers and the Gallery's Future Ferens group, some of whom have lent personal memorabilia to the exhibition along with Dove House Hospice and other local individuals.

During the 1960s Warhol emerged as a notorious Pop artist and media celebrity. His silver-walled New York studio, known as 'The Factory' attracted visitors from around the world including many pop stars and artists.

Much of the material on display relates to popular culture, reflecting British and American exchange during Warhol's era.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: "The event provides a taste of what is to come with our major Warhol ARTIST ROOMS exhibition opening next month.

"Inspired by Warhol offers visitors a local slant and has been developed with input from a number of remarkable Heritage volunteers. Their creativity and hard work has really paid off. This event is one of many cultural events of local, national and international significance as part of the city's Hull Gold 2012 year."

Nicola Lawson, of the Future Ferens, said: "It's been a great experience working on this project and it's amazing to see the history of where you live. I felt a connection to the time even though I wasn't alive then - the culture that emerged for young people then is still exciting today."

Heritage Volunteer, Alan Palmer, said: "The whole process has been a blast from start to finish and being involved in the exhibition an incredible roller coaster journey - and I think we've nailed it! I'm sure that anyone who comes to see this exhibition will be impressed."
