Active Hull celebrates national UK Inspire Day - 15/05/2012
Active Hull, a partnership between Hull City Council and NHS Hull, is celebrating UK Inspire Day tomorrow (16 May 2012).
UK Inspire Day is a celebration of the London 2012 Inspire programme - a family of over 2,700 projects across the UK that have been inspired by the Games to do something special in their local communities.
Hearty Lives Hull, which includes the Active Hull project, is one of the exceptional projects to have been awarded the coveted Inspire mark and become part of the London 2012 Inspire programme that has already given 10 million people across the UK an opportunity to join in with Games-inspired activity and try something new.
Active Hull has loads of fantastic sporting activities for all ages and abilities to help people lead a more healthy and active lifestyle. A wide range of activities are on offer such as dancing, disability sports, swimming, archery and walking groups.
Two highlights on offer from Active Hull include cycling and, coming soon, Nordic Walking. Hull is a great place to go cycling and has many cycle routes available. Social cycling groups take place regularly across the city for families and also specific cycling groups for women only called Breeze. One of the big cycling events taking place next month is the Big Breeze Bike Ride on 24 June in East Park. In addition there is also Sky Ride Hull which is coming back to the city for the second year running on 19 August.
Nordic Walking is coming to East Park from Monday 25 June, starting at 1.30pm. Nordic Walking involves walking with specially designed walking poles to make it a full body work out using 90 per cent of your muscles and burning 40 per cent more calories than walking normally. Nordic Walking is spreading across Europe and hopefully it will be just as popular in Hull. Poles are available to hire and coaches will be on hand to show people how to use them properly to get the full benefit.
Jonathan Edwards, Deputy Chair of the London 2012 Nations and Regions group said: "In the summer of 2012, the UK will come alive with the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Inspire programme has been mobilising people across the country for over four years and projects like Active Hull are leading the way in helping people to lead a more active lifestyle."
Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, added: "I am proud that our Active Hull programme is part of UK Inspire Day.
"Active Hull wants to encourage people to become fitter with the overall aim of reducing obesity and heart disease in the city. I hope that this national celebration will inspire local residents to try something new. Some of the Active Hull events are free with others at a low cost so there should be an activity to suit everyone."
Rachel Iveson, Public Health Manager for NHS Hull said: "The Active Hull programme is all about giving local people the opportunity to try something new and something fun. There is such a wide variety of activities to choose from with something to be enjoyed by all ages and all abilities. UK Inspire Day will encourage people to go out and give something a go."
