Loyal Address to mark the Diamond Jubilee - 10/05/2012
A Loyal Address is being presented to Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of her reign.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Colin Inglis, is taking the Loyal Address to London and will leave it with the Rt Hon Alan Johnson and Lady Virginia Bottomley, Chancellor of Hull University, for presentation to Her Majesty the Queen on behalf of the citizens of Hull.
Lord Mayor, Councillor Colin Inglis, said:
"The Diamond Jubilee is a once in a lifetime event, most people will remember no other Monarch than Queen Elizabeth II. To mark the occasion for Hull, the Council is asking Her Majesty to re-instate the Offices of Sheriff of Hull and High Steward, both lost in the 1972 Local Government re-organisation, as a permanent memorial to the second-longest reign in British history."
The Loyal Address will be contained in a special casket which has been prepared by Hull College. The Lord Mayor's Office approached the college following their previous work for HMS Iron Duke. Joinery student, Antony Cockerill, jumped at the chance to be involved and took great pleasure in helping manufacture the casket, along with college staff. Keith Knight, a technician at the college spent many hours working to develop the imagery for the two crests displayed on the top of the casket. The crests proudly displayed are Hull City Council's crest and the Admiral of the Humber crest.
The scroll expresses thanks from the citizens of Hull for Her Majesty's dedication to the people of the United Kingdom throughout her reign and for the several visits to Kingston upon Hull.
The city will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee on Monday 4th June, where events will commence at 1.00pm and finish with the lighting of the beacon at 10.15pm followed by a laser show finale.
