Hull City Council takes the lead on responsible dog ownership - 30/04/2012
Hull City Council's Dog Wardens Service is working in partnership with RSPCA and the Dogs Trust to promote responsible dog ownership as part of National Pet Month.

When you are looking to buy a dog you never know how much they truely cost as well as neutering and keeping them healthy in relation to fleas and worming.

A series of events will take place throughout the city to provide the public with information and advice on being a responsible dog owner.

Longhill Linkup (Longhill) on Tuesday 1 May, 10am - 3pm
Goodwin Club (Walker Street) on Thursday 3 May, 10am - 3pm
Respect Centre (The Quadrant) on Wednesday 9 May, 10am - 3pm
Holy Apostles Church (Walker Street) on Thursday 10 May, 10am - 3pm
Noddle Hill Nature Reserve (Noddle Hill) on Saturday 12 May, 1 - 3pm
The wardens will be on hand to give advice on how to train your dog, how to keep your dog healthy, the importance of dog neutering and also if you are thinking of owning a dog the responsibilities that you will be taking on.

As well as advice the wardens will be offering free microchipping, a flea and worming treatment and collar and tag for each dog that comes along. There also be free dog poo bags to ensure owners pick up their dogs mess.

The Dog Wardens will also be making people aware of the increasing number of Staffordshire bull terriers that are staying within our kennels and they will be appealing for suitable homes for these dogs.

Trevor Todd, Assistant Head of Service (Public Protection), said:

"This partnership event involving the Council's dog wardens, RSPCA and the Dogs Trust is a perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of being a responsible dog owner.

"The Dog Wardens Service and other partner agencies spend a great deal of time collecting stray dogs as well as investigating complaints of cruelty, neglect and mistreating of dogs. By highlighting the true cost of owning a dog and the importance of keeping your dog healthy and safe, we should hopefully reduce the number of cases of stray dogs and neglect cases that we have to deal with."

Piers Claughton, Senior Local Government Adviser at RSPCA, said:
"Last year the RSPCA saw a 22% rise in the number of convictions secured relating to dog cruelty. This growing problem needs to be addressed, and it starts in the community. We are delighted to support Hull CC's events that will help many residents in the city be more responsible dog owners."
