New photographic works join the Ferens permanent collection - 27/04/2012
Five newly purchased works by the acclaimed American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) will be displayed at the Ferens Art Gallery for the first time from on Saturday 28 April to 3 February 2013.
The works dating from the 1970s were purchased with the aid of the V&A Purchase Grant Fund at the end of 2011.
They are included in a re-hang of the permanent collection featuring the Gallery's growing collection of contemporary work from the last 30 years and featuring artist's such as Ian Breakwell, Helen Chadwick, Gavin Turk and Thomas Ruff.
The display is hung chronologically beginning with the works of Woodman who died an untimely death at the age of 22 in 1981. Though small in scale her introspective self-portraits are intensely powerful and have drawn admirers for decades. The first major exhibitions of her work in America for 25 years were mounted at the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco and Guggenheim in New York earlier this year.
Simon Green, Hull City Council's Head of Heritage, said:
"It's great to see further significant additions made to the Gallery's remarkable art collection and we hope the public will continue to come in and enjoy them."
Kirsten Simister, Curator of art at Ferens Art Gallery said:
"We are very grateful to the V&A Purchase Grant Fund for helping us to fund this acquisition and to the Future Ferens, a group of young volunteers who were closely involved with the final selection of the 5 images last year."
