Bude Park Primary School Project displayed in the National Gallery, London - 27/04/2012
Bude Park Primary School children have achieved great success by becoming one of seventeen schools across the country to be awarded a place in the National Gallery in London, in the 'Take One Picture' scheme for Primary Schools.

The scheme invites primary schools to use a National Gallery painting as a creative catalyst for learning across the curriculum. The painting, Paolo Veronese's Family of Darius before Alexander, one of the largest pictures in the collection, was the focus this year.

The painting inspired a range of discussion and investigation and has encouraged exploration across different areas of the curriculum, including art, textiles, English, maths, science and history. Involvement with the scheme has provided memorable experiences and creative opportunities for the children's learning and well-being.

Bude Park Primary School children were fascinated by Alexander forgiving Darius's family and allowing them to continue to live, being depicted in the painting. They considered a variety of phrases and symbols that represent forgiveness and decided that a handshake was a universal sign. We wanted to build a picture around our hands to demonstrate that the whole world could live in peace if we all showed a little forgiveness.

Every pupil in the school contributed to the picture by drawing around and decorating their hands. Each class chose a design ranging from the youngest three year olds making handprints with paints to our older pupils using Rangoli (Indian folk art) designs and collage.

The school's project will be showcased in the National Gallery between 9 May and 16 September 2012.

To celebrate the success the Lord Mayor, Councillor Colin Inglis and the Lady Mayoress Helena Spencer, have invited the pupils and teachers from the school to the Lord Mayor's Parlour in the Guildhall.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Colin Inglis said:

"It is excellent to see a school getting involved in a scheme like this that provides such unique and creative opportunities for children's learning. They have been rewarded for their efforts by having their project showcased in a prestigious gallery and I am looking forward to congratulating them. I hope it inspires other schools to take part in future years."
