Olympics: City 'On its Marks' for 100 day countdown - 18/04/2012
Hull is marking 100 day countdown to the London 2012 Olympics with a number of events and activities linked to the city's Hull 2012 Gold year.

Today (April 18) also marks two months until the Olympic Torch Relay comes to Hull and just one month until the flame reaches the UK.

Representatives from community groups and health services from the city have been invited to the the Eco Wellness Green Gym on April 18 at 2pm at an opening ceremony for the new addition to Shaw Park.

Today will also see the launch of two projects by Hull Truck supported by Hull City Council working with pupils across the city.

The 'On Your Marks' project has seen the Hull Truck team working with scriptwriter Dave Windass and Year 9 students from across the city on a production is being performed, produced, marketed, publicised and coordinated by the students. The 45-minute performance will tour around schools and will come with a workshop delivered by Hull Truck's creative learning team.

The 45-minute performance is going to be taken out and shared with other secondary schools in Hull. The performance explores the ideas of their aspirations and ambitions, feeding in nicely with the values of the Olympics.

'On the Go' celebrates Olympics messages 'to move, to learn and to discover' and is a project that is happening across the 100 day run up to the Olympics Torch carrying event in Hull.
The project involves Hull Truck Theatre's Creative Learning Department working with the special needs schools in Hull and facilitating drama, movement and arts based workshops to create and devise a six minute performance with each school involved.

The event will culminate in a large scale performance in the week of the torch carrying where all of the schools come together and show their pieces for an audience to enjoy.

Today is the launch event for the project where the majority of the participants will come together and meet all the other children and young people that are taking part in the event. There are also workshops being lead by Dark House Theatre Company (previously Full Body and the Voice) that specialise in actor training for people with learning disabilities.

Emma Waslin, Outreach and Participation Officer at Hull Truck Theatre said "This project is a really exciting opportunity for Hull Truck Theatre and the Special Schools in Hull to develop their relationships with each other and across the city.

"More importantly however the children and young people involved will benefit significantly from the experience, developing key life skills. The children and young people involved in the project will hopefully come away inspired by the arts increasing the likelihood that they will partake in similar events in the future.

"Additionally the Olympics is an event that should be for everybody and in Hull, Hull Truck Theatre want to support that as much as possible."

The Eco Wellness zone, one of the first of its kind in the country, is an outdoor gym (designed by the Great Outdoor Gym Company who designed the Adizones in the city). It has been funded from the Orchard Park and Greenwood Community Initiatives budget.

The Eco Wellness Zone was tested out on TV's 'Blue Peter' where it was used to power studio lighting. The idea is that the energy generated by pedalling the bike for instance then generates the energy for the lighting (green lights arranged in a heart shaped pattern around the edge).

The Eco Wellness zone includes:
An energy handbike
An energy cross trainer
Shoulder press
Lat pull down
Assisted pull ups
Scales
Height measure
Digital energy counter
Chief Medical officer guidelines on physical activity
Workout instruction

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Hull City Council's portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said:
"This free facility will make a significant difference to people's health for those who want to make healthy lifestyle choices.

"The gym, which will light up at night powered by those who use it - so at no cost to the council - could encourage people to exercise after work. It really is a state-of-the-art facility and is one of the first of its kind in the country.

"There is lots to do and see in the city this April as part of the Hull Gold 2012 year. The launch of these two projects also mark the countdown to the Olympics and to Hull hosting the Olympic Torch Relay celebration event, adding even more exciting sporting and cultural activities to see and get involved with in the city."

Meanwhile, Kingston Upon Hull Athletics Club's Olympic hopefuls UK number one hammer thrower Alex Smith and European champion Under 23 sprinter Annabelle Lewis are warming up for this Sunday's (April 22) Major Athletics event at Costello Stadium. They will be competing against UK teams and a Polish team in the level 3 competition.

Also competing are rising star hammer thrower Abbie Carter, who will be competing World Under 20s championship in Barcelona this year, and fellow club member Kate Pattison who is competing in the UK school games with two other athletes from the area to test out the Olympic Stadium ahead of the games.
