Skills and training opportunities for young adults leaving Local Authority Care - 18/04/2012
Two new trainee initiatives have begun in the city to provide opportunities, skills and experience to young adults leaving Local Authority care.
The Venue Café in the Guildhall is a new partnership between the Children and Young People's Service and Civic Catering and delivers training placements for young adults. Trainees will work across The Venue, the Ferens Art Gallery's La Loggia café and with the Guildhall banqueting team where they will develop skills within the catering business and will also complete an NVQ level 2. The Venue cafe will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Colin Inglis on Thursday morning at 9.30am.
Council staff are being encouraged to use the café to support trainees and help give them valued experience which will help them.
The Council has also invested in a Park Ranger Trainee scheme for young adults leaving Local Authority care in which trainees can obtain an NVQ and gain skills and experience working across all parks in the city, with support from park rangers.
Rob Murray, Assistant Head of Service for looked after children said:
"Training, experience and a chance to gain recognised qualifications provide excellent foundations to help young adults into employment, particularly for those who are disadvantaged."
"Both of these initiatives were as a result of a Corporate Parenting Board being formed, which includes cross-party elected members and senior officers within the Council. Young people in Local Authority care also attend the board on a regular basis and have a significant role in helping the board make decisions relating to children in care and young adults leaving care."
