Staff and volunteers make museum shipshape for visitors - 12/04/2012
Staff and volunteers have been working hard to get the Spurn Lightship ready for visitors next week.
The lightship opens for the season on Monday (16 April) and will be open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and from 1.30 - 4pm Sunday.
This is the first time the lightship has been open regularly to the public since closing for essential maintenance in 2009. Staff and volunteers have spent the last two weeks getting the ship ready for visitors.
The ship was built in Goole in 1927 and formed part of the network of lightships, buoys and light houses that guided shipping into the treacherous waters of the Humber. Visitors can see how the crew of seven spent a month on station, coping with bad weather and isolation. Both the crews and masters cabin are accessible along with the stores where a display of original equipment can be seen.
Decommissioned in 1975, the Spurn was restored by Hull City Council in 1983 and has been on display in Hull Marina since 1987.
