Golf open days offer a 'fairway' to play - 03/04/2012
Amateur golfers or those who have thought about taking up the game, can get professional help and advice at two Golf Open Days this month.
Hull City Council has organised the open days at the Springhead Park Golf Course, Willerby Road, and Sutton Park Golf Course, Saltshouse Road, in association with the Golf Foundation, Sportability, Total Golf Centres and Rich Pace Golf/One Stop Golf.
Professional PGA players Tony Haworth and Richard Pace will be on hand to free 5 - 10 minute quick fix lessons for people who visit on the days. There will also be golfing games and exercises for all ages including under 18s.
There will also be two golfing activities to take part in:
Tri Golf: a fun and safe way for all ages to play with lightweight, bright coloured plastic clubs with sponge and velcro balls.
Golf Extreme: metal clubs and lightweight balls that travel 30 per cent of the distance a real golf ball would making it a safe but realistic way to play
17 year old Kristian Smith, who grew up close to Springhead Park Golf Course, took golf up as a hobby and now competes in junior competitions. Kristian said:
"I have been playing golf for six years at Springhead Park Golf Club and play off a handicap of two. I grew up into a family that played golf with both my father and two brothers playing to a good standard so I was exposed to the game from a young age.
"Golf is a sport that anyone can play. It is easy to pick up and once you're hooked you'll never stop playing. Being a member of Springhead Park has made me a lot more mature and polite in my everyday life.
"In golfing circles you get the opportunity to play with lots of different players and this has given me more confidence in life generally when meeting new acquaintances. I feel that with the discipline required in golf, with its rules, dress code and etiquette has helped me be a well-rounded and mature adult."
There will also be competitions during the day including:
longest and straightest drive: at the first hole on each course
putting competitions: a long putt competition on the putting greens
Rachel Roberts, Assistant Head of Service for Sports, added:
"Golf is an excellent sport for honing precision skills and is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. The council's two municipal golf courses are competitively priced and are set in beautiful woodland.
"The Golf Open Days are a great way to get involved and find out more about the sport along with getting some professional help from professional players, which is an opportunity that doesn't come around often."
Council officers, and golf club representatives will be on hand to talk to people about how they could join the clubs or other leisure options available.
The Golf Open Day's will take place on:
Sunday 15 April, 2 - 6pm at Sutton Park Golf Course
Sunday 22 April, 2 - 6pm at Springhead Golf Course
