The Lord Mayor opens the Hull Marathon on Easter Sunday - 05/04/2012
The event taking place on April 8th will see around 1500 runners take part in the first marathon which starts and finishes in Hull. The Lord Mayor will open the 26.2 mile race at 8am in Alfred Gelder Street.
The marathon has been organised by Hugh Rice Jewellers and aims to raise money for charity, as well as being an event both runners and spectators can enjoy. Runners can raise money for a charity of their choice or support one of the three chosen charities - The Bull Foundation, Help for Heroes and the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal.
The Lord Mayor said:
"This is a great event to showcase some of the city's greatest attractions, with the route passing Hull Marina, The Deep and the Humber Bridge. I am grateful that the marathon is also supporting the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal."
This year the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal fund will support Hull Churches Home from Hospital, Freetown Society and Hull Amnesty International.
Spectators are welcome to come along and enjoy the atmosphere and the sights of the city. The first runners past the finish line, also Alfred Gelder Street, are expected in after 11.30am.
The event is part of Hull Gold 2012, an exciting initiative from Hull City Council that showcases our city's rich and diverse cultural heritage. There will be a range of cultural and sporting events happening in the city over the year and will provide a platform for people to get involved.
