The Council and NHS join forces to support carers in Hull - 04/04/2012
Hull City Council and NHS Hull will together commission a carers support service for adult carers in the city. This will mean that smaller carer support projects, currently commissioned separately, will come together under one contract to ensure duplication does not occur.
This sort of partnership approach is increasing across the city to provide more efficient and effective services for residents.
Angela Dunn, Head of Social Care for Hull City Council said:
"Our work with carers and consultations on their needs and aspirations has shown that the range of services was diluting the effect of the overall service. By re-commissioning the service jointly with NHS Hull we hope to raise the profile of the service and ensure it is convenient and approachable for carers. Ultimately we want to improve the service delivery so that carers will see a benefit and I am confident this commissioning arrangement will become a good model for partnership working."
Karen Billany, Carers Lead for NHS Hull said:
"Carers play a vital role in our society and the contribution they make saves the NHS and Local Authority thousands of pounds each year. The new service we will be delivering is intended to be innovative in its approach but, more importantly, is designed to ensure that the needs of carers, who can often be hidden or overlooked, are able to be met more effectively and comprehensively in the future."
22,412 adults self identified as carers in the 2001 census. It is recognised that carers provide invaluable help to residents, often at cost to their own health. Support for carers helps them to maintain their own health and to balance their caring role with life away from caring which could include work, other family commitments, leisure pursuits, social activities and time alone.
Organisations will be invited to tender for the new contract from 5th April. North Bank Forum are holding a workshop relating to the tender on the morning of Friday 13th at the Freedom Centre. For more information call 300300.
The new service will be in place from 1st July this year.
