Council invests over #1 million for youth services in Hull - 04/04/2012
Young people will soon see more choices in the range of youth activities and services provided for them across the city.
Hull City Council is investing around £1.1 million into youth services in Hull over the next year. This investment will see better choices of youth provision for young people. The services will also be provided more evenly across the city meaning better access for all.
John Readman, Corporate Director for Children and Young People's Services, said:
"This year an extra £100,000 has been invested into youth services bringing the total to £1.1 million. This is helping the council to offer a better range of services across the city at free or low cost for Hull's young people.
"We are also ensuring that the youth service provision is spread more evenly across the city. This year some areas which may not have had youth service provision in the past, will see new services offered.
"We're constantly talking to young people to find out what sort of activities and services they would like to have. By listening to what they have said it has been helpful in assisting us to decide how and where we allocate our funding. We have aimed to allocate funding fairly and keeping young people's wishes as a priority."
By offering youth services on evenings, weekends and throughout holiday periods, it gives young people a safe environment to socialise in, learn and have fun.
The organisations which will be working in partnership with the council to offer youth provision include:
Hessle Road Network
Rhema Youth Works
Goodwin Development Trust
Child Dynamix Partnership - East
St. Mike's Youth Project
North Bransholme Sports Forum
Bridges Hull
Courts Community Association
The Warren
Bransholme Community Arts Enterprise
These organisations will offer children and young people from 10 to 19 years old, or 24 years old for those who have additional support needs, the chance to take part in exciting and enjoyable facilities or activities like youth clubs, dancing, arts, drama, fishing and sports.
Rachel Roberts, Assistant Head of Service for Universal Offer and Partnership Development, added:
"By investing around £1 million into youth services in Hull, we are continuing to help communities provide excellent youth provision at local venues.
"This investment builds on existing partnerships and has opened up new links too. Our priority is to ensuring that the youth work we have commissioned with our partners remains focussed on the needs of the city's young people and works in partnership with our own council provision as part of a locally coordinated offer for all young people.
"We have some very committed youth organisations in the city and this investment will help to ensure that they continue to deliver high quality youth work at times and in places where young people want it, building on existing provision and linking youth provision into a broader local partnership of services for children, young people and families."
One part of the programme will also provide support to two new youth club venues that will shortly be offering services and activities to young people in the Porter Street and Bransholme areas. These services will be offered by the Goodwin Development Trust and Bridges Hull, which will see some of the staffing and activities supported by Hull City Council.
