Hull City Council is urging voters to make sure they are registered to vote, before the deadline on Wednesday 18th April.
To vote you have to be on the electoral register. It's easy to register - call 300 300 or print off the form from the Council website or www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.
If you have moved, changed your name, or are not yet registered you can update your details on the electoral register at any point during the year.
Students can vote in local government elections at both their home and at their term-time address, as long as they are not in the same local government area.
This year the local elections take place on Thursday 3rd May.
Residents who are going to be away on 3rd May can also apply to vote by post or by proxy. Voting by proxy is a convenient way of voting if you are unable to get to the polling station. By proxy just means that you appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf.
How people can vote
people can vote in person at a polling station, which are open from 7am to 10pm on 3rd May
people can have a postal vote if they are not able to go to a polling station for any reason - you must register for a postal vote or for changes to existing postal of proxy votes by 5pm on Wednesday 18 April
the deadline for new proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday 25th April
