Hulls Town Team submits Portas Pilot bid - 30/03/2012
Hull's Town Team has finalised its submission for the Portas Pilot today to try to access up to £100k for its vision for Whitefriargate, by uploading its bid video about Whitefriargate on You Tube.
The bid submission comes the day after the Government announced Hull would get £100K from the multi-million pound High Street Innovation Fund, which has been brought in as part of a range of measures from the Government in reaction to the Portas Review.
Organisations involved in compiling Hull's Portas Pilot application include Hull Bid, Hull School of Architecture, Hull Bondholders, Hull Daily Mail and Hull Civic Society, Fred Marketing and Old Town traders.
Traders, retailers and the public have been consulted at a number of workshops and consultation events.
The focus of the application is Whitefriargate, as a gateway to the Old Town, which the submission states: "has the potential to become a distinct area of Hull with a rich historic fabric that accommodates a thriving café bar and restaurant sector alongside a cluster of independent retailers with the upper floors of buildings being developed for city centre living and public spaces animated within a high quality public realm creating a strong sense of 'place'."
Jon Pywell, Hull City Council's Assitant head of service - Culture, said: "The town team's vision is for Whitefriargate, as gateway to the Old Town, to become a more vibrant and enterprising area.
"Our bid looks at the potential of Whitefrirgate to become a distinct area of Hull with a rich historic fabric that accommodates a thriving café bar and restaurant sector alongside a cluster of independent retailers with the upper floors of buildings being developed for city centre living and public spaces animated within a high quality public realm creating a strong sense of 'place."
"We will work towards our vision for the area whether this bid is successful or not, but being successful would be a massive boost."
