Darkness will fall for Earth Hour awareness - 28/03/2012
Queen Victoria Square will power down when the lights are switched out for an hour on Saturday 31 March to mark Earth Hour.
Working in partnership with Humberside Police the council has arranged for the lights in Queen Victoria Square, including the display lights for Ferens Art Gallery, Hull's Maritime Museum and Hull City Hall, to be switched off between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to raise awareness of how small steps can save energy.
The council hopes the awareness event will inspire people to join in for the international event. Earth Hour, organised by the World Wildlife Fund, and is expected to involve more than 50 million people in 35 countries across the world - all switching off their lights off.
Martin Budd, who has responsibility for climate change at Hull City Council, said:
"Individually we may think we can't make a difference, but together we can have an enormous impact. Everyone in Hull can be part of this global event on Saturday just by switching their lights off for the hour.
"It doesn't have to just be on Saturday though just by each of us making very small changes in our habits we can help cut carbon emissions and save money, whether it's remembering to switch off lights we are not using, not leaving computers and televisions in standby mode or only filling our kettle with the water we need to boil.
"We would urge as many residents as possible to take part in Earth Hour by not just switching off lights but as many electrical items as possible at 8.30pm for an hour on Saturday."
Humberside Police will patrol the area during the switch-off to offer reassurance to those who may walk through the area during this time.
Inspector Lee Edwards from Riverside Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "This is an excellent opportunity for local people to get involved in an international event and enjoy a different view of the sky unaffected by street lighting. Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be in attendance offering support to anyone who becomes concerned visiting the area while it is unlit. In addition, there will be the high visibility public order patrols in the city centre keeping those socialising in Hull city centre safe."
