Wrongly labelled drinks removed from shops - 21/03/2012
Following a routine inspection of a retail shop in Hull by a Hull City Council Environmental Health Officer a factory in Peterborough has been closed down.
A small number of stores in the city were found selling fruit drinks and yoghurt based drinks that had labelling deficiencies. Products had also been distributed to shops in Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, Coventry and Wolverhampton.
The yoghurt drink label stated the drink was produced by Kepenek based in Peterborough.
Peterborough City Council food inspectors visited Kepenek on Friday 17 February 2012 after being alerted by Hull City Council about concerns over a yoghurt drink found on sale in shops in Hull.
Following the inspection Peterborough council officers issued the owner of the business with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice, which immediately closed the business. This was later supported by a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order granted by Peterborough Magistrates' Court.
The premises will remain closed until the imminent risk of injury to health is removed and the product can be manufactured safely. Peterborough council officers are working with the business to improve standards.
Councillor John Hewitt,Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Families, said:
"Without our Environmental Officer finding these drinks they still would be on sale in Hull and the factory in Peterborough would still be open. All the drinks in Hull have been removed from sale. Our officers will pass on any information to protect the public from any products that don't meet the necessary requirements."
Samantha Olive, Principal Environmental Health Officer for Peterborough City Council, said:
"Anyone who has these items in their homes should throw them away immediately and not drink them. They were not produced in line with food safety requirements and therefore could be contaminated with harmful bacteria which has the potential to make people ill.
"Food and drink manufactures have a duty to follow food safety requirements. We will continue to target businesses that fail to meet these guidelines so that members of the public are protected from harm."
