To mark the nearing completion of the refurbishment to Western Library, the library is having a topping out ceremony on Saturday 24 March at 9am.
Councillor Darren Hale will be present at the topping out ceremony and the final work will see the installation of photovoltaic panels to the roof.
Refurbishment work on the Western Library started in November 2011 and has received a full make over. The library is one of the first libraries in the city designed to be energy sustainable with photovoltaic panels to support the Council's green city agenda.
Councillor Darren Hale, Deputy Leader of Hull City Council, said:
"It's exciting to see we are nearing the completion of the works, it will be a fantastic energy efficient facility to serve residents and community groups for years to come."
Works carried out to the Western Library include:
the underpinning of exterior walls to correct subsidence
replacement of the floor in some areas to correct sloping
complete replacement of the roof
the addition of an extension giving the public access to three meeting rooms on the first floor
access to IT suite and meeting room on the ground floor
the installation of photovoltaic panels
redesign of the garden
interior refurbishment, and refit of-shelving and furniture etc.
Groundwork in Hull is working with Hull City Council, Architects NPS and Campbells Design and Engineering to create the fencing for the Western Library's new community garden.
A Design Workshop will take place on Saturday 24 March, 9am - 2pm at the Boulevard Village on The Boulevard which gives local residents and community groups the opportunity to help design the new fence. Groundwork is encouraging everyone to come along and help create a piece of history.
Councillor Darren Hale added:
"This event is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to be involved in creating a piece of historic public art as part of the refurbishment of the Western Library. They will see their contribution daily as part of the library building, as will their families in the future.
"The Western Library was the first library in the city to be funded with public money, that it is now undergoing a major refurbishment is a wonderful indication of the City's commitment to learning."
