Prosecution for benefit fraud results in 18 week prison sentence - 20/03/2012
Hull City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have sent yet another warning to benefit fraudsters that they have no place to hide.
Kelly Rumkee (29), of Clanthorpe, Hull, (previously of Easethorpe, Hull). pleaded guilty to 2 offences of dishonesty under the Social Security Administration Act 1992 after failing to declare a change in her circumstances to the Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.
Investigators found that she had claimed Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Income Support on the basis she was a single parent, but she had in fact been living with a partner for more than 3 years. As a result she was overpaid Housing Benefit and Income Support totalling £29,997.79.
Kelly Rumkee was sentenced at Hull Crown Court on the 16th March 2012 to an immediate 18 week prison sentence. This sentence is on top of having to repay every penny back of the money fraudulently obtained.
Hull City Council's Assistant Head of Service (Audit & Fraud), Peter Holland said:
"This case highlights the consequences individuals can face when conscious choices are made to steal money from the public purse.
It also shows that the courts recognise the seriousness of benefit fraud. At a time when thousands of people find themselves out of work, it is imperative that public funds are stopped from being stolen by a minority who choose to cheat the system."
Jobcentre Plus Fraud Investigation Area Manager, John Carter, added:
"No one should think they can get away with benefit theft. DWP and Local Authority investigators are working together to track down those guilty of stealing money they are not entitled to, bringing them before the courts and making them face the consequences of their action. They also have to pay back all the money taken."
